GUWAHATI, Sept 6 Former champions ASEB Sports Club went one step closer towards winning the title in the RG Baruah Super Division Football Championship.

In a championship group match of the meet at the Nehru Stadium here today, ASEB trounced Ganga Sports Club by a clear margin of 2-0 goals. Now ASEB have 20 points in their kitty with two matches to go. Green Valley and NF Railway are following with 16 and 15 points respectively while Ganga is placed at the bottom with nine points. In the other match of the day, defending champions NF Railway Sports Club played a 1-1 draw against Green Valley SC.

On the first ground, ASEB was clearly the dominating side with better cohesion. Their team work was so planned that the Ganga players hardly could counter them in any department. Their midfielders Sanjoy Boro and Priyo Kumar Singh were in nice form and generated power for the frontliners with frequent passes. Sanatumba Sarma put ASEB ahead in the 27th minute off a melee. After a disorganised situation from either sides in front of the Ganga goal, Sanatumba pushed the ball into the empty net as goalkeeper Munshi Saifuddin fell down.

Jessy Vanlalmuana scored a classic goal at the fag end of the first session. He dribbled past atleast three Ganga defenders and the goalkeeper before pushing home. Ganga strikers hardly could create any situation from where goals could have been scored. ASEB defenders were so steady that they never allowed the opponent frontliners to cruise into their striking zone. Elkana Rosangzela should have scored in the first session but he failed to beat ASEB custodian Daoga Brahma in a one-on-one situation.

Green Valley hold NFR: Green Valley Sports Club snatched one point from a jaws of defeat in their match against NF Railway Sports Club.

On the second ground they were trailing 0-1 till the 90th minute, but their luck took a turn in the added time and managed to draw parity. After a barren and lacklustre first session, NF Railway went 1-0 ahead in the 88th minute through substitute Chayaram Basumatary. Apollo Rongmei levelled the issue in the added time off a one-two pass with Thomson Langthasa.
