Arunachal Wakro orange gets GI registration

ITANAGAR, July 19 - Arunachal Wakro orange has been registered under Geographical Indication (GI) Registration along with eight other products from the North East.

The other products are Karbi Anglong (Assam) Ginger, Tezpur (Assam ) Litchi, Khasi Mandarin orange (Meghalaya), Large Cardamom (Sikkim), Bird Eye Chilly (Mizoram), Kachai Lemon (Manipur), Queen Pineapple (Tripura) and Tree Tomato (Nagaland).

�Arunachal Wakro orange has been exported to Bangladesh and from there to other countries in other names depriving the State of its intellectual property right,� Director of the Arunachal Pradesh Horticulture Research and Development Mission, Egam Basar said in a statement issued here recently.

A committee comprising representatives from orange grower�s organisation, Arunachal Pradesh Horticultural Produce Marketing & Processing Board and North Eastern Regional Agriculture Produce Marketing Corporation (NERAMAC) would monitor the quality and frame terms and conditions for use of the brand name, Basar said.

The GI Registry is responsible for the administration of law relating to Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999, he added. � PTI
