GUWAHATI, April 24 Raktakarabi is considered one of the most complicated plays of Rabindra Nath Tagore. Penned in 1925, this play is still popular because it highlighted a theme that is still relevant the issue of capitalism and plight of the common people.

Now this same play adapted into Assamese by noted director Naren Patgiri will be staged on April 26 and 27 at Rabindra Bhawan as Aru Nandini.

This programme organised by the Indian Peoples Theatre Association, Assam Chapter on the occasion of the 150th birth anniversary of Rabindra Nath Tagore will have two shows on both the days at 4.30 pm and 6.30 pm.

Raktakarabi revolves round the issue of capitalism and exploitation and the growing divide between the rich and the poor. The issues raised in this play is relevant even today, said Patgiri, pointing out that the burning problems in the State reflect the concern raised by Tagore.

It needs to be mentioned here that Patgiri has brought in issues such as mega dams, farmers rights over land, right over natural resources, etc., in Aru Nandini.

Tagore had stressed that plays should capture the way of life of the rural masses and their culture. So I have used the element of folk music and dance of the North-east in my play, said Patgiri, observing that he would be waiting to hear the response of the theatre lovers to his experimental venture.

I have experimented in this play. The characters are symbolic and they represent the present-day issues, said Patgiri. The music in the play has been scored by Bibhuranjan Choudhury.
