NORTH LAKHIMPUR, Dec 12 - Renewed calls to scrap the Citizenship (Amendment) Act-2019 were made as members of the public clamoured across Lakhimpur district on Friday to reignite the anti-CAA movement. The Lakhimpur district unit of All Assam Students Union (AASU) staged a massive demonstration in North Lakhimpur against the CAA on Friday.

Named as Gana Hunkar (mass clamour), the Lakhimpur unit of AASU held the demonstration at Gariajan in North Lakhimpur where tributes were paid to the five martyrs who laid down their lives while protesting against the Act a year ago. Speakers at the gathering warned the state and central governments to honour the sentiments of the Assamese people. The Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) also staged a demonstration against CAA in front of the Deputy Commissioners office in North Lakhimpur.

Termed as Jatiya Garjjan, the KMSS also called for repeal of the CAA as Assam could no longer carry the additional burden of foreign nationals.

Similar protests against the CAA were also reported from other parts of the district.
