Amaya Chaliha passes away

GUWAHATI, March 6 � Amaya Chaliha, wife of former Chief Minister of Assam, Bimala Prasad Chaliha, passed away due to old-age ailments today. She was 86, and was a much respected figure.

Today her last rites were performed at the Nabagraha cremation ground, in the presence of a large number of family members and admirers. She leaves behind a daughter and three sons.

Among those who condoled her death was Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, who described her as a dedicated social worker, who was dear to all sections of people. Gogoi extended his sympathy to late Chaliha�s family. The Bharatiya Janata Party, Assam Pradesh, has also mourned her demise and sent its condolences.
