AJYCP seeks holiday for Sankaradeva death anniversary

GUWAHATI, Aug 31 - Demanding declaration of the death anniversary of Mahapurush Srimanta Sankaradeva as a holiday under the NI Act, instead of a local holiday, the Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chhatra Parishad (AJYCP) today said that the State government should take the step ahead of the next death anniversary of the Vaishnavite saint and reformer.

As the occasion is a local holiday, banks and other financial institutions and Central government organisations do not have a holiday on the occasion. As a result, a large number of Assamese people working in such institutions are deprived of the opportunity to pay their obeisance to Srimanta Sankaradeva, whose influence on socio-cultural foundation of the State is beyond explanation, the Parishad said, while asking the State government to shun this discriminatory attitude towards local culture and traditions.
