AHRC orders Rs 3 lakh interim relief to kin

GUWAHATI, Sept 12 � The Assam Human Rights Commission (AHRC) has ordered payment of an interim relief of Rs 3 lakh to the next of kin of Jhankar Saikia. Jhankar (21) and his father were severely assaulted by some auto-rickshaw drivers at Diphu Bazar in Karbi Anglong on June 25, in the presence of some police officers. Jhankar succumbed to his injuries on July 1.

The Commission had already ordered a probe into the matter following which, SK Nath, Commissioner, Hills & Barak Valley Division, has been entrusted with the task of conducting an inquiry into the matter.

A division bench of the AHRC comprising Justice Aftab H Saikia, Chairperson, and Tarun Phookan, member, ordered the interim relief, pending disposal of the case. The Commission has also granted additional three weeks� time for submission of the report as requested by the investigating officer.

The same division bench has asked, in the interim, the Government of Assam through its Chief Secretary to grant an�immediate interim relief of one lakh rupees to one Durga Prasad Bordoloi within 60 days. Durga was kept handcuffed during treatment at hospital.

A complaint petition was filed by Jurimoni Bordoloi, wife of Durga Prasad Bordoloi of Kaliabor Tiniali, Nagaon, alleging human rights violation of her husband. Bordoloi was arrested on November 12, 2012 at Tezpur in connection with Tezpur PS Case No. 1219/2011.
