Action likely against Gautam Roy for celebrating BJP win

HAILAKANDI, June 14 - Strong action may be taken against Congress leader Gautam Roy by the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) for reportedly celebrating the victory of the BJP in the Lok Sabha election, sources said.

The sources said the APCC may take the decision of Roys suspension from the party at a meeting on Saturday in Guwahati. Besides Roy, action may also be taken against some more leaders for sabotaging the partys prospects in the Lok Sabha election.

Roy was given a show cause notice on May 25 by APCC secretary Ranjan Bora for celebrating the BJPs victory by distributing sweets, dancing, and chanting Jai Shri Ram in public. However, Roy did not give any reply to the show cause notice, sources said.

The Congress lost both the Silchar and Karimganj Lok Sabha seats and APCC president Ripun Bora questioned the role of two former ministers, Gautam Roy and Siddique Ahmed, and initiated an inquiry to ascertain their role.

Roys son, former MLA Rahul Roy, was earlier suspended from the party for six years. Rahul Roy was the president of the Hailakandi district committee of the Congress.

Gautam Roy, however, said that a section of party leaders were trying to tarnish his image.

Roy, who is now in Kolkata, said that chanting Jai Shri Ram was not offence as a Hindu and it was his personal choice. He said that there will be no harm if he is suspended by the Congress for raising a Hindu slogan.

Roy said he has not decided to join the BJP. Rumours regarding Roy joining the BJP started after the Assembly election in 2016 but the leader always ruled out the possibility. The BJP has kept mum over Roy joining the party.
