BONGAIGAON, Nov 21 - The All Assam Students Union (AASU) on Saturday organised a protest meeting and rally at the ITI field in Bongaigaon town to sensitise the local populace against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016.

The student leaders criticised the Union and State Governments for their bid to rehabilitate the Hindu migrants from Bangladesh in the State ignoring the provisions of the Assam Accord and revising the Citizenship Act 1955.

The indigenous voters had brought the BJP Government in the State to power by polling 85 per cent votes with a hope to get protection of their land and existence. But soon after assuming power, this Government had betrayed the people by adopting a soft approach towards illegal migrants from Bangladesh.

Creating a division among the illegal migrants, the Government had planned to rehabilitate Hindu refugees from Bangladesh in the State, said AASU adviser, Dr Sammujjal Bhattacharya.

So, we have united with all the indigenous groups to fight against the Governments policy on illegal migrants because we would never allow the State to take the new burden of fresh migrants, rather we demand constitutional safeguards for the people of the land, Bhattacharya said.

I demand the Government to chase all illegal Bangladeshi migrants away from the State enforcing the police. I also warn the ministers not to deliver communal speeches like Hindu zealots as such hate-speeches would weaken the bond between Hindus and Muslims in the State, said AASU president, Dipanka Kr Nath.

The protest programme which the student union named as satyagraha was also attended by leaders of other student organisations.

Following the meeting, the students took out a protest rally from the venue to Barpara public field in the town in the afternoon. Many students and women joined the rally.
