92 quake survivors from State back in country

GUWAHATI, April 28 � A total of 92 persons from Assam who had got stuck in Nepal following Saturday�s devastating earthquake, have returned to India so far.

Speaking to reporters here this afternoon, Home Commissioner LS Changsan said information about 141 persons from the State who were in Nepal, has been received.

Altogether 92 have arrived in New Delhi or are back in Assam, 13 have been traced and are safe in Nepal, seven are in hospitals in the neighbouring country, while 22 remain untraced.

Bodies of seven persons from Assam have been recovered and six of those have been identified and the embalming process has been completed. Those whose bodies have been identified are Kalpana Adhikari, Rina Das, Bhanita Deka, Bhumika Das, Hema Saikia and Joyshree Bora.

The bodies are expected to be flown to New Delhi by a special aircraft later today.

�The State government has made arrangements to have the bodies transferred to Guwahati after they arrive in Delhi from Nepal,� she said.

The State government has decided to send a disaster management team to Nepal by road and the team is expected to leave later tonight.

The team will be headed by IGP (Law & Order) SN Singh and will comprise paramedics, doctors and others.

The team will make arrangements to evacuate the dead bodies as well as other people from Assam stuck in Nepal in case of any problem in shifting them by air.

In the meantime, senior IPS officer Umesh Kumar has reached Kathmandu and has got in touch with the Indian Embassy in Nepal as well as the local authorities to facilitate treatment of injured people from Assam as well for facilitating their return to the country.

The State government has also directed the Kamrup Metro district administration to crack down on tour operators who had organised trips of pilgrims from the State to Nepal, but were later found to be not cooperating with the authorities following the earthquake.
