MANGALDAI, April 18 - Barring a few incidents of EVM and VVPAT disorders and subsequent delay in the start of polling, the second phase of the Lok Sabha election in Darrang district for the Mangaldai HPC today passed off peacefully. No untoward incident has been reported in the district so far. The overall turnout of the electorate in the HPC has been recorded at 75 per cent till the stipulated time of 5 pm. However, the voting percentage is likely to increase.

The turnout in the 10 Assembly segments is as follows: Kalaigaon-79.07 per cent, Mangaldai-75.6 per cent, Sipajhar-81.3 per cent, Dalgaon-84.7 per cent, Mazbat-73 per cent, Udalguri-74 per cent, Panery-75 per cent, Kamalpur-71.34 per cent, Rangiya-69.55 per cent and Nalbari 65 per cent. Polling was delayed by more than one hour at No. 10 Bhebarghat LP School in Mangaldai town due to malfunctioning of EVM.

Significantly, Rangiya and Kamalpur LACs, which witnessed comparatively lower voter turnouts, are the home constituency of BJP candidate Dilip Saikia and Congress candidate Bhubaneswar Kalita respectively.

Meanwhile, the participation of differently abled (people with disabilities) voters in the election in Darrang district has been found to be encouraging due to the proactive role played by Anganwadi workers who worked as facilitators under the supervision of the District Social Welfare Department here.
