485 bottles of cough syrup seized

IMPHAL, July 6 - In the wee hours today, a team of Thoubal District Police arrested two persons, namely Md Shahid Rahaman (21) and Md Mustak Khan (19) from their respective houses at Lilong Tharaorok and recovered 485 cough syrup bottles from their possession, according to police sources.

The arrest was made at about 2.10 am on July 6 and led by Inspector O Ajit Singh, OC of Lilong Police Station. An FIR was lodged at Lilong Police Station in this connection.

Meanwhile, troops of Assam Rifles recovered cash and contraband goods during frisking operations on July 5.

According to a press release, the Assam Rifles troops stopped an individual named Khulpuwa Moshil (27) of Pallel,Tegnoupal, riding a Kenbo bike carrying a rice bag during regular vehicle check at Mobile Vehicle Check Post Sita around 6.30 pm on July 5.

On thorough checking, cash bundles amounting to Rs 21 lakhs were found hidden inside the rice bag. The cash is suspected to be extortion money. The individual was carrying the cash from Heirok to Khampang Khunou.

In another such incident, based on specific inputs received at 5 pm, a team of Assam Rifles intercepted a Maruti Suzuki Swift (MN 01AK 2904) driven by Oinam Chakrabarti Singh (31) of Thoubal in General Area Khunbi Tuinam and recovered 5,400 packets of imported cigarettes worth lakhs. They were being carried without a valid permit or documents.

The recovered items along with the detainees were handed over to Tengnopal Police Station and the Superintendent of Customs Protection Force, Pallel for further legal action, the release added.
