40 hour blackout in Garo Hills

Update: 2010-09-15 00:00 GMT

TURA, Aug 25 Over 12 lakh people in three districts of Garo Hills were literally left stranded and powerless for two whole nights and one day due to a disruption in electrical supply thanks to poor maintainence by the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL) formerly known as the MeSEB.

The entire power supply snapped at 4 pm on Monday and power board officials were at their wits end to find the fault. The supply line passing through Nogstoin in West Khasi Hills and heading towards Nangalbibra distribution point in South Garo Hills district was disrupted at a place called Nongpular, 18 kms away.

However, field technicians failed to get the line restored until Tuesday noon only to receive another setback as lines crashed at a different location soon after. It was 40 hours later, at approximately 8 am on Wednesday that the people of Garo Hills heaved a sigh of relief to experience a return to normal life.

This is not the first time the Garo Hills have experienced a power cut of such a long duration. A few months ago, a similar situation occured wherein the entire region experienced a shutdown for 36 hours.

Tura looked like a town under curfew once darkness fell.
