350 houses damaged in Mizoram squall

AIZAWL, April 17 - Pre-monsoon storms accompanied by squall and hailstorm has left trails of destruction at Mamit in Mizoram-Bangladesh-Tripura border during the past 48 hours damaging at least 350 houses, official sources said.

At least 170 houses were destroyed in West Phaileng of which 40 houses were completely damaged, Mamit district Deputy Commissioner Lalbiaksangi said.

In Mamit town, 65 private homes were partially damaged while 16 homes were completely destroyed and 21 government buildings were damaged, Lalbiaksangi said.

A church building of the Church of God (Seventh Day) was completely destroyed by a strong wind in Mamit town.

She said many houses were also damaged in Khawhnai, Tuirum, Ailawng, Dapchhuah and West Serzawl villages.

Most of the power transmission lines were damaged in Mamit town with at least ten electric poles uprooted, leaving the town completely powerless, she said. � PTI
