Guwahati, Sept 5: At least 20 persons, including students, are feared drowned after the country-made engine boat they were travelling on capsized in river Brahmaputra this afternoon.
The boat, which originated from Guwahati, met with the accident a few metres before reaching the shore near Aswaklanta temple in North Guwahati.
Around 36 persons were on board, Commissioner of Police PC Saloi said. Around 12 passengers could be rescued till the time of filing this report.
Members of the NDRF and the SDRF have been pressed into rescue operation.
Although the reason behind the boat capsizing is still not known, questions are being raised about the efficacy of the boat under the Inland Water Transport authorities.
