HAILAKANDI, Oct 3 - Along with rest of the country, the 150th birth anniversary of Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi, was celebrated in Hailakandi district.
At a central function organised by the Hailakandi Municipal Board at Gandhi Ghat here on Tuesday, officials of the district administration and municipal board paid tributes to Mahatma Gandhi and urged everyone to realise his cherished dream of a clean India.
Earlier, Additional Deputy Commissioner, Amalendu Roy; Additional Deputy Commissioner, Ruth Lienthang; SDO (Sadar) Prodip Timung; president of Indian Red Cross Society, Hailakandi chapter, Khitish Ranjan Paul and other officials offered floral tributes at the life-size statue of Mahatma Gandhi.
Cleanliness drives at the market places and other areas were carried out by the Hailakandi Municipal Board as part of Swachhata Hi Seva.
Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan, Hailakandi, in association with the Rotary Club, also organised a programme on the occasion. As part of the celebrations, Rotary Club organised a poster competition on the theme �Swachhata Abhiyan� for students of class V to VII and class VIII to XII. Top three teams from each group were awarded.
Gandhi Jayanti was also celebrated in the schools with great enthusiasm across the district.
JALAH: The Jalah Circle Office employees observed the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi with various programmes on the office premise. The programme started with the inauguration of the statue of Mahatma Gandhi by Bijita Deka, Circle Officer of Jalah.
Social workers and office employees Surendra Nath Baro and Bijay Das addressed the gathering while Bijita Deka, Circle Officer, delivered the inaugural speech. Several persons, including Bhupen Das, Gajen Das, Bijay Baro, Kapil Talukdar and Deva Kumar Baro, participated in the programme.
Later, a cleanliness drive was carried on the premises of Jalah Circle Office under the theme �Swachhata Hi Seva�.
Meanwhile, Mahatma�s birth anniversary was also celebrated in many educational institutions of the area with various programmes, including cleanliness drives, tree plantations, awareness meetings etc.
JORHAT: The doctors of the Jorhat Medical College and Hospital (JMCH) along with employees of all branches on Tuesday undertook a cleanliness drive in the surrounding areas of JMCH to commemorate Gandhi Jayanti.
A streetplay on cleanliness and hygiene was also put up as part of the drive to promote Swachh Bharat.
A free health check-up of all safai karmis (cleaners) of the JMCH was carried out on the occasion. JMCH Superintendent Dr Saraubh Borkotoki and Deputy Superintendent Dr Nilutpal Bhattacharjee spoke at the function organised to mark the occasion.
