Guwahati, April 11: The prime accused in the case surrounding the death of Assamese cultural icon Zubeen Garg, North East India Festival (NEIF) organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta, has moved a fresh bail application.

The bail plea was filed before the designated special sessions fast-track court on Friday, with the defence initially seeking an early hearing on April 13.

However, Special Public Prosecutor Ziaur Kamar said the court has scheduled the hearing for April 22.

“They wanted the hearing date to be fixed on April 13, but the court has listed it on April 22. We will be filing our objection to the bail,” Kamar said.

Mahanta, one of the prime accused in the case, had earlier also approached the court for bail but later withdrew his plea.

His fresh application comes at a crucial stage of the trial, which is being conducted on a day-to-day basis to ensure expeditious proceedings.

Earlier, on April 1 the Assam Advocate General Devajit Saikia has maintained that the investigation and trial are progressing steadily, with the case currently at a critical stage, including arguments related to discharge petitions.

The court had begun hearing proceedings with a mandate for day-to-day trial, reflecting the sensitivity and public importance attached to the matter.

Family members of the deceased had earlier expressed hope that the fast-track mechanism would lead to timely justice, while the state had also emphasised its commitment to a fair and speedy trial.
