Guwahati, Oct 1: Two members of Zubeen Garg’s band — Shekhar Jyoti Goswami and Amritprava Mahanta— were remanded to judicial custody on Friday after completing their 14-day police remand in connection with the singer’s death in Singapore last month.
The duo appeared before the Kamrup Chief Judicial Magistrate and were later taken away in separate police vans.
Authorities have not disclosed the prison where they will be lodged, following the violent clashes outside Baksa District Jail on Wednesday when five other accused in the case were remanded to judicial custody.
Goswami and Mahanta were initially arrested on October 3 after several days of interrogation by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) and placed under 14 days’ police custody.
Since October 1, the SIT has arrested seven persons in connection with the case, all of whom are now in judicial custody.
Earlier, on Wednesday, unrest at Baksa District Jail erupted after a Chief Judicial Magistrate Court ordered the lodging of five accused — Shyamkanu Mahanta, Siddhartha Sharma, Sandipan Garg, and Zubeen’s two personal security officers, Paresh Baishya and Nandeswar Bora — in the newly built, modern facility.
Supporters, angered by what they perceived as preferential treatment for the accused, gathered in large numbers outside the jail, demanding capital punishment and chanting slogans like “Joy Zubeen Da!” Residents and fans from nearby districts also converged, further escalating tensions.
