NDA ahead in 77 seats, trends indicate victory

Guwahati, May 2: The ruling BJP-led NDA in Assam is leading in 77 assembly seats, while the Grand Alliance spearheaded by the Congress is ahead in 40 places, according to the trends available in the Election Commission's website.

The BJP is leading in 62 seats, and its partners- Asom Gana Parishad is ahead 10 and United People's Party, Liberal in seven constituencies.

Congress candidates are leading in 26 seats, while those of its ally AIUDF in 11 and Bodoland People's Front in three.

Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and AGP chief and minister Atul Bora are leading from Majuli, Jalukbari and Bokakhat.

Congress President and MP Ripun Bora and leader of the opposition in the assembly Debabrata Saikia are trailing in Gohpur and Nazira.

Jailed Akhil Gogoi of Raijor Dal is leading in Sibsagar, while former AASU and anti-CAA leader Lurinjyoti Gogoi from Assam Jatiya Parishad is trailing in Naharkatia.

Assam has a 126-member assembly and 64 seats are needed for a simple majority. - PTI

Trends at 1:00 PM

Guwahati, May 2: As of 1:00 PM, the Bharatiya Janata Party is leading in 60 seats while the Indian National Congress is leading in 26 seats. The AIUDF has established leads in 11 seats and Asom Gana Parishad is also leading in 11 seats. NDA alliance UPPL has managed to maintain a lead in 7 seats while UPA alliance BPF is maintaining a lead in 3 seats.

Silchar, May 2: After second round in Badarpur LAC, AIUDF candidate Abdul Ajij got 8,790 votes while Biswaroop Bhattacharjee got 4,699 votes. In Patharkandi, INC candidate Sachin Sahu got 13,030 votes and BJP’s Krishnendu Paul managed 3,784 votes. After third of counting in South Karimganj LAC INC candidate Siddeque Ahmed got 12,337 votes, Ajij Ahmed Khan secured 9, 765 votes.

After second round of votes in Ratabari LAC, BJP’s Bijoy Malakar got 8, 275 votes. INC candidate Shambhu Singh Malla got 5,801 votes.

Meanwhile, after second round of counting in Silchar LAC, INC candidate Tamal Kanti Banik got 8,178 votes while BJP candidate 5,505 votes and Independent candidate Dilip Kumar Paul got 862 votes.

In Borkhola LAC after second round, INC candidate Misbahul Islam Laskar has 7,909 votes while BJP’s Amalendu Das has 7,133 votes.

After round 3 in Sonai constituency, BJP candidate Aminul Haque Laskar has 14,238 votes, AIUDF candidate Karim Uddin Barbhuiya has 2,849, Independent candidate Asish Haldar has 6,133 and TMC candidate M Santi Kumar Singh has 268 votes.

People blessed us, BJP to retain power in Assam: Sonowal

Guwahati, May 2: Elated over the initial trends of Assam poll results, which showed that the BJP has an edge over its rivals, Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Sunday exuded confidence that the saffron party-led alliance will retain power in the state.

The ruling BJP-led NDA is surging ahead of the Grand Alliance spearheaded by the Congress in Assam, leading in 77 of the 119 seats, trends available on the Election Commission website at 12.15 pm showed.

"People have blessed us. We can say for sure that the BJP will form government in Assam. We are coming back to power with our partners AGP and UPPL," Sonowal told reporters.

Asked if the ruling coalition will be able to bag 100 seats, as claimed by the saffron camp ahead of the polls, he said, "The trends are completely in favour of the BJP. The party will achieve its target. However, we will have to wait for the final results."

Sonowal is maintaining a comfortable lead in Majuli constituency. - PTI

Guwahati, May 2: As of 12:00 PM, the Bharatiya Janata Party is leading in 61 seats while the Indian National Congress is leading in 25 seats while AIUDF has established leads in 11 seats. Asom Gana Parishad, the NDA alliance, is leading in 10 seats as of 12 PM.
