Zubeen heckled by miscreants

By City Correspondent

GUWAHATI, Aug 13 - A group of miscreants heckled popular singer Zubeen Garg late last night in the Ganeshguri area when he was returning to his Kahilipara residence from a recording studio, while the curfew in Guwahati was still in force. According to the FIR filed by the singer at the Dispur police station, the six-member group came in a vehicle bearing registration number AS01-BY0675 and after overtaking they intercepted the vehicle in which Zubeen was travelling.

They hurled abuses at me and had beer bottles in their hands. They had pronounced derogatory remarks and also used unparliamentary words when I tried to defend myself, Zubeen stated in the FIR.

I was accompanied by my driver and two PSOs provided by the government, he added.

A case has been registered at the Dispur police station.

While certain circles are trying to link the incident with Zubeens decision to become the brand ambassador for agricultural and allied sector of the State, which had drawn sharp reactions from various quarters, especially on social media platforms, police said that it was premature to draw any conclusion at this moment.

Questions are also being raised on the violation of curfew rules by both the accused group of youths and the popular singer as well.

Condemning the attack on Zubeen, State Health and Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the singer should be kept out of petty politics. Police will soon arrest the culprits as the vehicle number is mentioned in the FIR, he said.

Sarma said that Zubeen State should be given freedom to work for the art and culture of Assam. I neither want him to join the Congress or the BJP. I want him to work for preservation and promotion of art and culture of the State, he added.

The vehicle mentioned in the FIR is registered in the name of Hirak Rajbangshi. Rajbangshi is a vice president of the Kamrup (Metro) district unit of Assam State NSUI.

Police has already launched a massive search operation to nab the culprits and also raided the residence of Rajbangshi at Pub Sarania, but the accused is on the run. Commissioner of Police Munna Prasad Gupta said the accused would be brought to book soon.

Meanwhile, the State unit of National Students Union of India (NSUI) condemning the incident suspended Rajbangshi from the organisation with immediate effect.
