Zero enrolment leads to closure of 19 Nalbari schools

NALBARI, Aug 31 - While the second round of Gunotsav in Nalbari district is scheduled to be held in the first week of October, the elementary education in the district is in a pathetic condition due to shortage of students in certain areas.

The acute shortage of students in the government sector elementary schools has adversely affected the academic scenario in Nalbari district. Nineteen elementary schools of the district have already been closed down by the Education department due to lack of students. Moreover, 20 other schools in the district are running with less than six students on the rolls.

The schools which have been closed down by the Education department include 13 schools in Pub Nalbari Education block, four in Barigog-Banbhag block and two in Paschim Nalbari Education block. Three Middle English schools � Nareswari Balika ME, R Goswami Balika Vidyapith ME and Pitpara Pukhuri Balika Vidyapith under Pub Nalbari Education block have also been closed down.

The Education Department has reportedly attached the teachers to nearby schools. The primary schools which have been reportedly closed down are � Kalag Hatkhola LP School, Katpuha LP School, Ratneswar Sarma LP School, Gandhiatola LP School, Barbara LP School, Paschim Japarkuchi LP School, Natun Dahudi LP School, Balikaria Balika LP School, Buhragosain Than LP School under Pub Nalbari Education block, Kothora LP School and Latima Milon LP School, Baghmara LP School and Deharkuchi LP School under Barigog-Banbhag Education block and Pokowa Balok LP School, Dakshin Piplibari LP School under Paschim Nalbari Education block.

Only three primary schools � Simalia LP School, Sonkani Middle English School and Shaktipara LP School have been running with a single student. According to official sources, the number of students in 90 primary schools are less than ten. Official sources further informed that a total of 33 primary schools out of the 998 in the district are functioning with only one teacher.
