Youth killed in police encounter

MANGALDAI, June 10 - A youth, identified as Ainul Haque (28), was killed in a police encounter at Saktola embankment here in the wee hours of Tuesday.

Haque was the son of Sahar Ali, a resident of Kachari Bhetitop village under Orang PS in Udalguri district bordering Darrang. Darrang district�s Superintendent of Police, Amrit Bhuya, while talking to this correspondent on Wednesday afternoon, confirmed the identity of the youth. �Preliminary investigation has revealed that the antecedent of the youth is doubtful. He frequently used to change his habitations,� the officer said.

Bhuya said that Sub-Inspector Chandan Das led the encounter. Police also recovered a point 22 bore pistol and a bike without the number plate from the youth�s possession.

According to police, two of his accomplices on another bike managed escape. Police suspected him to be a member of a notorious gang of criminals which over the last few months had hijacked several trucks and vans laden with IMFL, iron bars, tin sheets, etc., plying on the NH-15, particularly in between Mangaldai and Sipajhar of the district.
