Youth in quarantine attempts suicide

By Staff Correspondent

SILCHAR, June 26 - A youth, aged around 25 years, who allegedly threatened health officials of Cachar district to discharge him from institutional quarantine, attempted suicide on Thursday.

The youth jumped off the first floor of a multi-storeyed apartment in Banskandi which was turned into a quarantine centre. He sustained injuries and was taken to Silchar Medical College and Hospital for treatment, said an NHM official.

Since his admission in the quarantine centre on June 19, the youth had been threatening officials with dire consequences if he was not released. The SMCH authorities have been requested to examine his mental health, the official said. ADC Sumit Sattawan said 66 persons were accommodated at the quarantine centre. Of the 66, 61 were released. The remaining five persons, including the youth, were also likely to be released when their reports came out negative.
