DIPHU, Jan 19 - Auto-rickshaw drivers at Diphu Railway Station thwarted an attempt to abduct a minor girl on Wednesday evening.
The girl, who hails from Bakaliaghat, around 60 kms from Diphu, was being lured by a youth to West Bengal. The girl was later handed over to the leaders of Simeon Rongphar faction of Karbi Students� Association, a local student organisation.
General secretary Thomson Rongpi subsequently informed mediapersons that the girl was spotted at Diphu Railway Station moving about suspiciously by a woman hailing from her village.
Incidentally, the woman was at Diphu Railway Station to drop her daughter. The woman recognised the girl as one from her village. On seeing the woman, the girl tried to flee from the scene, but with the help of some auto-rickshaw drivers, the elderly women managed to grab hold of both the girl and the youth.
The auto-rickshaw drivers then took the two to the KSA�s Simeon Rongphar faction office which is located near the railway station. After confirming about the girl and the youth, the KSA members handed the duo to Diphu Town Outpost.
According to police, the youth identified himself as Arun Mandal (22), son of late Naren Mandal of Kariala locality of Malda district in West Bengal. He claimed to have known the girl since over a year now. The youth arrived in Diphu town by train on Wednesday and on the same day went to Bakalia to meet the girl.
As per his confession before police, the youth asked the girl to wait at Bakalia market, from where the duo came to Diphu.
