Yaoshang celebration from today

IMPHAL, March 22 - A festive mood has filled the air in Manipur on eve of Yaoshang and Good Friday with people from both hills and valley thronging the Thangal and Paona Bazaar in Imphal for last-minute shopping today.

Yaoshang, as the festival of colours is called in Manipur, will be celebrating for five days from March 23. The local clubs are organising various sports events in their localities, apart from observing Thabal chongba, a Manipuri folk dance, community feasting, etc., while Good Friday will be observed on March 25.

Meanwhile, Manipur Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh, who returned from New Delhi after meeting AICC leaders, extended warm greetings and good wishes to the people of Manipur on the joyous occasions of Yaoshang and Good Friday in two separate messages.

�Yaoshang, one of the greatest festivals of Manipur, is a festival of joy and reconciliation. The fest offers an opportunity for all of us to set aside our differences and to come together to rejoice life,� Ibobi said in one of the messages. �On this solemn occasion of Good Friday and in the rejoicing of Easter Sunday, let us rededicate ourselves to the noble ideas of love, peace and forgiveness for strengthening the bond of brotherhood and unity among all the people in the State,� the other message stated.

Inspector General of Assam Rifles (South) Major General VS Sreenivas and all ranks of Assam Rifles also extended warm greetings and sincere goodwill to the people of Manipur on the auspicious occasion of Yaoshang and Easter.

Acknowledging the people�s active participation in Yaoshang festival, the Manipur Urban Development Agency (MUDA) is all set to award a sum of Rs 2,000 each to desirous local clubs for conducting an open public speaking competition on �Our Responsibility in Keeping Our Locality Clean� during the festival.
