Write off farm loans in flood-hit areas: AIUDF

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Oct 8 The All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) has demanded that the loans of farmers in the flood-hit areas of Goalpara and other affected districts should be written off as the recent deluge has made thousands of agriculturists destitute.

AIUDF supremo and Lok Sabha MP Badruddin Ajmal, who recently made a week-long tour of the flood-affected areas, said in a statement that the large tracts of farm land in Goalpara and other affected areas have been covered by sand from river beds which has made the land unsuitable for farming.

The government should undertake efforts to remove the sand using scientific methods so that the land can be used for farming purposes, he said.

He said loans secured by farmers under the Kisan Credit Card and other schemes should be written off as they have suffered huge losses due to the recent flood.

Ajmal called upon the government to provide adequate compensation for the loss of property and disruption in agricultural production.

He also alleged that inmates in relief camps are not getting basic stuff like medicines, water and baby food in requisite quantity.
