SHILLONG, July 20 - A writ petition was filed in the Meghalaya High Court today for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the death of Sub-Inspector, Pearlystone Joshua Marbaniang in January this year at Patharkhmah here.

The mother of the deceased, Dorothy Marbaniang filed the petition, stating the Special Investigation Team (SIT) headed by Inspector JW Suting and supervised by SP (City), Vivek Syiem, after 135 days of probe has failed to throw any light into the death of her son.

In all aspects of the matter the SIT could not draw any conclusion till date on the case. As such a direction be passed for handing over the case to the CBI, D Marbaniang said in her petition to the Court.

Immediately after the death, the police claimed that the police personnel committed suicide. But, later under pressure from the family and the public, the Government instituted the SIT to investigate into the death.

In the petition, D Marbaniang said that her son was found dead soon after he detained 32 trucks carrying coal illegally to Assam, at Patharkhmah. As such, it leads to a strong suspicion that he might have been killed for the detention, she alleged.

Her son died on January 25, however, no FIR was filed immediately and only on the fourth day an FIR was filed.

In the FIR it has been mentioned that the service pistol of the deceased was found in his left hand. However, the victim was a right-handed person.

It is prayed that a free, fair and independent investigation though CBI may be directed in order to bring the culprit to light or else every honest and brave person who dares to raise voice against such social evil will be eliminated in the name of suicide, the mother said.
