Worlds oldest spiritual guru on visit to State

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, June 24 Sivananda Baba, said to be the oldest living spiritual guru on earth, and affectionately called Baba by his disciples across the world, is currently in Assam.

Baba will be at the famed Kamakhya shrine during the days of Ambubachi, i.e., till June 27.

Baba, who is 118 years old (born on August 8, 1896), is still leading an active and healthy life. It is expected that he would soon be included in the Guinness Book of World Records as the oldest living person in the world.

As a strict vegetarian, he lives on plain rice and boiled vegetables only. He never takes fruit, milk and any kind of milk products. He can even read and write without his glasses and is free from any disease. His day starts at 3 in the morning with the practice of yoga and free-hand exercises for an hour or two. After that he keeps himself busy till 9 at night, a statement issued by the Sivananda Pariwar said.

According to Baba, who loves to lead a simple life, his teachings are very contemporary and philosophical in contrast to his age. I never ask my followers to worship certain gods and goddesses. I tell them to believe in one God and lead a life of simplicity, love and compassion, he says.

Baba was born and brought up in West Bengal. He visited Varanasi in 1979 and has since been staying in his ashram near Durgakund.
