World Tourism Day observed

SHILLONG, Sept 27 - Meghalaya Chief Minister Mukul Sangma has underlined tourism as one of the key sectors that can transform the State�s fortunes in terms of economic growth and development.

Addressing a gathering during World Tourism Day here today at U Soso Tham Auditorium, Sangma said, tourism has always been a key sector for the State�s development. He informed that the State has witnessed increased footfall of tourists over the years.

Imphal Correspondent adds: World Tourism Day was observed today at the picturesque village of Phayeng, near here, with the theme �Sustainable Tourism � a Tool for Development�.

Speaking on the occasion, Minister for Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution and Revenue Karam Shyam highlighted the contribution of tourism in the economy. He said the sector accounts for 10 per cent of global GDP and has generated one in 10 jobs in the global workforce.
