GUWAHATI, March 20 - Help Earth, in association with the Kamrup (Metro) district administration celebrated World Sparrow Day today.
On the occasion, the need for conserving urban biodiversity was highlighted with emphasis on birds.
With rapid deforestation, birds are fast losing their home, and with RCC buildings replacing traditional Assam-type houses, sparrows and other birds are losing those nooks and corners provided by Assam-type houses.
Help Earth, as part of its initiative to install bird boxes in different parts of the city, installed a number of bird boxes in the Dighalipukhuri area to draw public attention, especially youths towards the cause.
The initiative was formally inaugurated by Dr M Angamuthu, Deputy Commissioner, Kamrup (Metro).
In his address, Dr Angamuthu stressed the need for conservation of urban biodiversity and encouraged the citizens to take steps to protect and conserve plants and animals around them.
Jayaditya Purkayastha, general secretary of Help Earth said that Guwahati has the potential to become a model city for India in terms of urban biodiversity conservation with its wide range of habitat types along with its geographic position, and that people�s involvement and awareness hold the key to attaining that feat.
�Thus, until we voluntarily provide living space to our feathered neighbours, their stay in our locality would be very short-lived. Thus, Help Earth came out with the innovative idea of installing bird boxes in different parts of the city,� he said.
