World Press Day observed in Manipur

IMPHAL, May 3 - The World Press Day was held under the aegis of Sahitya Thoupang Lup, Imphal, at the Manipur Hindi Parishad Hall here today.

Director of the Information and Public Relations (IPR) Department H Balkrishna and ex-Director of IPR Meghachandra Kongbam attended the function in which the first Thyam Premkumar Award was presented to veteran journalists and writer Kangujam Madhumangol for his contribution to the field of Journalism.

Balkrishna handed over the award, which includes a citation and Rs 10,000 in cash to Madhomangol. He also gave a brief profile of the awardee and appreciated him for his work.

Meghachandra Kongbam, who presided over the function, said that the freedom of press is very important for a democracy. He also highlighted the challenges and dangers faced by journalists.

Ex-District Information Officer Chongtham Ibungobi Singh spoke about the life of Thyam Premkumar, stating that he was a dedicated person who constantly worked for the improvement of information services.

Making a presentation on the occasion, the head of the Regional News Unit, AIR Imphal, Dr Aribam Ibomcha Sharma stressed the importance of freedom of press as a pillar of democracy.
