HAILAKANDI, Sept 23 - International Day of Peace, which is also known as World Peace Day was observed in different schools across Hailakandi district on Friday.

Inspector of Schools Rajiv Kumar Jha informed that the various schools of the district observed the day in a befitting manner for lasting peace in the world.

At Janaki Charan Higher Secondary School, World Peace Day was observed under the able supervision of Aparajita Roy Choudhury, where teachers and students participated with fervour and enthusiasm.

Choudhury and Jahar Nath told the students that the need of the hour was to help end the spectre of war and violence globally and for lasting peace. Faculty members Debosree Sinha, AC Das, Ashok Dey, Munna Dam, Nandita Banik, Mitali Das and Mitali Purakayastha too pitched in to make the event a success.

The students participated in the event by making posters with catchy slogans on the theme Peace and Harmony. The event was also observed at AC Girls HS School at Kalinagar with varied programmes.

Similarly, the event took place in many other schools across the district in which the students were made aware of the significance of the day at a time when the world is sitting over stockpiles of nuclear weapons, thus endangering its very existence.

Celebrated for the first time in 1982, the United Nations General Assembly declared the day as a moment devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace, both within and among all nations and peoples.

The theme for this year is The Right to Peace The Universal Declaration of Human Rights at 70. It commemorates the 70th anniversary this year of the landmark declaration of universal human rights adopted by the General Assembly in Paris on December 10, 1948. The universal declaration enshrines the fundamental democratic principle in Article 3: Everyone has the right to life, liberty and security of person.
