World Meteorological Day celebrated

GUWAHATI, March 23 � The World Meteorological Day was celebrated at the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Guwahati today. The theme of the day this year was �Climate Knowledge for Climate Action�.

According to a press release, scientific lectures and exhibition depicting meteorological aspects were organized at the RMC, Guwahati on the occasion. Prof (Dr) Sushanta Kumar Dutta, Principal, Girijananda Chowdhury Institute of Management and Technology (GIMT), Azara, Guwahati was the chief guest of the function. He delivered a lecture on the topic �Measurement and Prediction of Solar Radiation�.

Later, Dr Sanjay O�Neill Shaw, Deputy Director General, Meteorology (DDGM), delivered a lecture on the topic �Combating Climate Change�, which was followed by the lectures delivered by Rupa Jaggi, Scientist-D on the topic �Agro Meteorological Services in India and its Importance in Climate Change� and Sunit Das, Scientist-D on the topic �Weather and Youth�.

Posters, models and various meteorological instruments were displayed. Visitors from local schools, colleges and various departments were briefed on the importance of various meteorological parameters.

Dr Shaw expressed his happiness on the interest shown by the people in the scientific lectures and appreciating the services rendered by the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD). He also informed the participants that IMD has plans for strengthening the meteorological support in the Northeast which will help in dissemination of more user-friendly meteorological products resulting in quality weather forecast.

It needs mention here that March 23 is the foundation day of the World Meteorology Organisation (WMO), the specialized agency of the United Nations for meteorology (weather and climate), operational hydrology and related geophysical sciences. It was founded on March 23, 1950.
