World Laughter Day observed at Tezpur

TEZPUR, May 3 - The Tezpur Laughing Club observed the World Laughter Day at the Swahid Bakori here on May 1.

The Club formed in 2009 under the aegis of senior citizens, Haren Nath and Rabin Sharma, has been observing the day since its inception on every first Sunday of May. The Club, which started with only two members, now has 131 members. Besides organisational works, it also deals with social activities like providing financial help to the poor and meritorious students and the economically disadvantaged people of the society.

It is to be stated here that World Laughter Day was created in 1998 by Dr Madan Kataria, founder of the worldwide Laughter Yoga movement. Record says that Dr Kataria, a family doctor in India, was inspired to start the Laughter Yoga movement in part by the facial feedback hypothesis, which postulates that a person's facial expressions can have an effect on their emotions. The celebration of World Laughter Day is a positive manifestation for world peace and is intended to build up a global consciousness of brotherhood and friendship through laughter. It is most often celebrated by gatherings of people in public places with the sole purpose of laughing. Its popularity has grown exponentially with that of the Laughter Yoga movement now counting thousands of Laughter Clubs in more than 105 countries.

However, to mark the day, the Tezpur Laughing Club organised a special function showcasing solo acting by Mantri Kalita and magic show by a noted magician of Tezpur, Bijay Sharma, founder of the Bhumika Magic Corner. Bijay Sharma was assisted by Purbasree Sharma, Puja Devi, Prajjalika Kashyap, Radujjal Kashyap and Rupam Das (background music).

The event started at 7 am with the unfurling of the flag of and a chorus directed by Anil Kumar Bora. It was attended by noted personalities like Dr Biswa Ranjan Kalita, Dr Satish Chandra Bhattacharya, Nirod Chowdhury, Dr Syama Saikia among others and the members of the club.

Emphasising on the importance of the day, Dr Biswaranjan Kalita in his speech as chief guest said that laughing is a good way of keeping oneself healthy. Dr Satish Chandra Bhattacharya said that the most valuable medicine for health that can be achieved free of cost is �laughing� while Nirod Chowdhury said that he still feels young at seventy only due to laughing.
