World House Sparrow Day observed in Nalbari dist

NALBARI, March 22 - The Krishi Vigyan Kendra of Nalbari organised World House Sparrow Day 2019 on March 20 in order to generate awareness about the urgent need to conserve house sparrows for curbing its rapidly declining population all over the globe.

The programme was sponsored by the Regional Agricultural Research Station of North Lakhimpur, Assam Agricultural University under the All India Network Project on Vertebrate Pest Management.

Dr Mridul Deka, scientist of KVK, Nalbari welcomed the participants and delivered a talk on the role of birds in agriculture. He recounted the beneficial effect of birds in agricultural pest management and the reasons behind the diminishing population of useful birds.

Speaking at the meeting, Debojit Borah from Green Environment Task Force, an NGO of Nalbari delivered a lecture on sparrow conservation and exhibited his model of sparrow nests before the audience.

Dr Arfan Ali, SMS (Animal Science), KVK, Nalbari also delivered a detailed lecture on sparrow behaviour, role of sparrow in maintaining the urban biodiversity and conservation strategies to be adopted by the residents.

He urged the people to help the sparrows to prosper by offering water, feeders and space for nesting in and around their houses. The participants realised the importance of conservation.
