World Environment Day observed in Manipur

IMPHAL, June 5 - Braving the scorching summer heat, tree plantation, cleaning of surroundings, public meetings and social service besides holding of various programmes for students marked the World Environment Day observation in Manipur on Sunday.

The State level observation was held at MFDC auditorium here where Forest and Environment Minister I Hemochandra appealed to the people to rededicate themselves to conserve the environment for future generations by planting a tree for every child birth.

Stating that State�s forest and environment condition is in a precarious situation, he said we need to curtail the demands to reduce the supply. Additional Chief Secretary Shambhu Singh appealed to the public and students in particular to indirectly get involved in boycotting those individuals who are involved in damaging forest and wildlife.

Principal Chief Conservator of Forest PN Prasad opined that forest provide livelihood to people while Director of Environment Dr M Homeshwor said time has come to control illegal trade (of wildlife) with public involvement.

Earlier, the Minister also distributed endemic tree saplings to local club volunteers while Dr H Nandiram, a retired botanist spoke on State�s environment condition.
