GUWAHATI, June 5 Shishu Sarothi celebrated the World Environment Day on Friday at Birubari with a plantation drive. It was a community drive in which along with the students and staff of Shishu Sarothi, the entire neighbourhood of Birubari was involved. Students from the neighbourhood school Assam Valley, Birubari also joined in the plantation drive.

This is one of the first steps towards many upcoming environment-friendly and sustainable activities that Shishu Sarothi has taken up in recent times. Shishu Sarothi is coming up with a self-sustainable canteen in the lines of reuse, reduce and recycle model wherein the produce from the organic kitchen garden present in the premises will be used. The idea behind the event was to create awareness among the community as a whole to be involved in keeping the entire area clean and green on the lines of the Chief Ministers MANASA scheme.

Prime Cabs, the radio taxi operator, initiated an awareness drive to celebrate the World Environment Day among its commuters.

With the Our Planet, Our Responsibility campaign, the company will raise awareness on environmental issues in the region. Prime Cabs has focussed on waste reduction and forest conservation, the primary concerns plaguing the region through the initiative.

Understanding the responsibility to make the young students aware about the environmental issues of today, NPS International School organised a myriad of competitions across the school to commemorate the occasion.

The school has been celebrating this event every year religiously so that the young minds are exposed to this impending concern regarding a safe, secure and sustainable planet.

This year the theme for the World Environment Day is sustainable development and sustainable production. The students were sensitized on various environmental issues through a host of activities. The students from grade KG to XI were made to participate in house-wise quiz competition, class-wise finger printing activity, rangoli making, T-shirt painting, face painting and power-point presentation on sustainable development, drawing competition and poster making, all related to one theme Save the Environment.

The tradition of planting a sapling was also carried out as many students gathered in the school courtyard and planted the trees, taking a solemn pledge to safeguard the flora and fauna of their land. To encourage the students to work for the preservation of the environment, RJ Aaliya from Big FM also joined them and had a candid talk on the topic. The day ended with a note of hope that humanity will change for better and we will walk towards a greener future.

Meanwhile, the 33rd Battalion of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) Force took up a plantation drive on the World Environment Day at Sonapur Camp today. Suresh Kumar Yadav, Commandant, along with officers and others participated in the plantation drive. More than 650 types of saplings were planted. On the occasion, a painting competition was organised for the children of Primary School, Sonapur by the unit. Suresh Kumar Yadav, Commandant, 33rd Battalion awarded the winners of the competition. This was stated in a press release.

Meanwhile, the 128 Bn, CRPF headquarters here celebrated the World Environment Day by planting a large number of saplings around its campus. Commandant Madan Kumar accompanied by other officers took part in the programme.

AGP urges Modi to take up influx issue

GUWAHATI, June 5 The AGP today insisted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi take up the issue of illegal Bangladeshi infiltration into Assam during his visit to Bangladesh. The party has submitted a memorandum to Modi demanding that he initiate the necessary steps for a repatriation treaty with Bangladesh for a permanent solution to the vexed foreigners issue in the state.

Addressing mediapersons here, president of the party Atul Bora slammed the saffron party for ignoring the Assam Accord by proposing to give citizenship to people from Bangladesh facing religious persecution and taking refuge in India. We have strongly opposed division of illegal foreigners on religious grounds, said Bora urging Modi to implement the clauses of the Assam Accord in true spirit.

Bora further said that the large-scale presence of illegal foreigners have not only threatened the economic and political situation in Assam but has also endangered the existence of the indigenous communities by changing the demography.

Bora also reiterated that the party will oppose all big dams that will adversely affect Assam.
