World Book Day observed

DERGAON, April 24 � The World Book and Copyright Day was observed at Dergaon on April 23. The day was observed with a day-long programme under the aegis of Pratyush Prakashan, a newly formed publication group of Dergaon.

The programme started with an awareness meeting held at its office premises. In the meeting Sanjoy Kr Hazarika, secretary of Pratyush Prakashan, explained the objective of the day to the members of the group. Through his speech he highlighted the history of World Book and Copyright Day starting from 1923. He also explained that the cause behind the declaration of the day by UNESCO in 1995.

Later, the group felicitated a senior social worker and a book lover Ghanakanta Dutta. A team including Sanjoy Kr Hazarika along with Bharat Bora, Tapan Mahanta, Biren Ch Saikia, Rajib Hazarika, Jogananda Khataniar and Simanta Bezbaruah went to the residence of Ghanakanta Dutta and felicitated him with a phoolam gamocha and a packet of books.

Replying to the felicitation Dutta expressed his great satisfaction over the felicitation offered to him. He also revealed that he was actively involved in opening the Pragati Pustakalay in 1947 at Dergaon and since then he developed a love for reading books and also encouraged others for developnig the reading habit. He said that the human beings must read books to get the knowledge for uplift of the society.

It is pertinent to mention here that Dutta (77), a retired employee of Assam Police Radio Organisation, has been bedridden since 2000. And at present he spends his time in reading books, etc.
