Workshop on use of natural ester oil in transformers

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, April 24 - The Institution of Engineers (India), Assam State Centre, organised a workshop on the topic Transformers going green natural ester oil, an effective green insulating fluid for power and distribution transformers on its Panbazar premises here on April 27.

The fluid has generated considerable interest among the power engineers and consumers because natural ester oil is manufactured from sources like soya, sunflower seeds etc and hence renewable against the petroleum-based mineral oil normally used in transformers.

Moreover, this fluid is biodegradable. Apart from fulfilling all the criteria required for cooling and insulating transformers, this fluid eliminates the hazard of fire and explosion associated with transformers filled with mineral oil.

Thus, from environmental considerations, and more importantly for the fact that it eliminates fire and explosion hazard, the ester fluids have found wide acceptance in transformers in place of mineral oil globally.

In India also, many DISCOMS like Tata and GETCO have already started using ester oil in transformers, said a statement.
