Workshop on technical usage of Hindi and NE languages

GUWAHATI, Dec 19 - A two-day workshop-cum-training sessions on �Technical uses of Hindi as well as the languages of North-East India� was organised by the Department of Hindi, Pragjyotish College, in collaboration with the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), a scientific society of the Ministry of Information Technology, Pune and Technology Development for Indian Languages Programme (TDIL), Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, Government of India, on December 15-16 at the Pragjyotish College, Guwahati.

In the inaugural session which was presided over by Principal i/c of Pragjyotish College, Dr Paramananda Rajbongshi, the appointed speaker Dr Shikhar Sarma, Registrar of Cotton University, Guwahati, deliberated on the growing importance of computer applications in language teaching and learning. The chief guest of the inaugural session Dr Padma Patil, Head of the Department of Hindi, Shivaji University, Kolhapur, stressed on- preservation and development of our native languages through the application of technology that may lead to finding means of livelihood.

In the technical sessions, Vinateya Koratkar, Joint Director, C-DAC, Pune; Dibyendu Karmakar, member of LRC, C-DAC, Pune; and Dr Atiur Rahman Khan, Principal Technical Officer, C-DAC, Pone, displayed the language software (Hindi, Assamese, Bangla, Bodo, Manipuri, Nepali) developed by TDIL and explained the uses of the software for teaching learning and different career options through their applications which includes localisation project management framework, language editing, contribution for better translation, review and rating of translations. The language software portal provides transliteration services from English to Indian languages, legacy code to Unicode convertors, JavaScript based onscreen INSCRIPT Keyboard and SakalBharati Open Type, font and many more for integration with the MMPs. Paritosh Das, Authorised Regional Co-Ordinator C-DAC GIST PACE, NE State, Guwahati, delivered an informative lecture on introducing various courses of language learning by using the language software.

The technical session on December 16 was conducted in the newly-constructed, well-furnished and spacious Language Laboratory of Pragjyotish College, to the great delight of the student participants from Cotton University, Gauhati University, Raha College, RGB College, KRB College, LCB College, Narengi Anchalik College etc., in addition to the host institution Pragjyotish College.

In the concluding session Chinmoyee Talukdar, Deputy Director of Higher Education, Assam, distributed the certificates to the participants.
