Workshop on sports law held

GUWAHATI, July 21 - The National Workshop on Sports Law and Management sponsored by the Bar Council of India and organised by University Law College, Gauhati University jointly with Studio Nilima was held at the Phanidhar Dutta Seminar Hall in Gauhati University today.

The welcome address was delivered by Dr Mridul Hazarika, Vice Chancellor, Gauhati University while the lighting of the ceremonial lamp and inaugural address was carried out by Justice L Nageswara Rao, Judge, Supreme Court of India. Speakers highlighted the importance and relevance of sports law in today�s world of sports. They also revealed that it is almost mandatory for the sportspersons, coaches, officials, support staff, among others to be aware of these laws thoroughly in order to avoid threats to their career.

Among those who spoke on the occasion were Professor Hayden Opie AM, Senior Fellow, Melbourne Law School; AP Misra, Judge (Retired), Supreme Court and Chairman Legal Education Committee, Bar Council of India; Justice Ujjal Bhuyan, Judge, Gauhati High Court; Usha Nath Banerjee, senior advocate, Calcutta High Court, Ombudsman, Cricket Association of Bengal and chairman, Disciplinary Committee, AIFF; Anirudh Chaudhry, treasurer, Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI); Amitabh Choudhary, acting secretary BCCI; Justice Arup Kumar Goswami, Judge, Gauhati High Court; Dr Subhash Basumatary, Regional Director, Sports Authority of India (SAI), Guwahati and Dr Abhijeet Salvi, Anti Doping, Age Verification and Medical Consultant, BCCI.

Anshu Jamsenpa � the first woman to scale the summit of Mt Everest twice in five days and only Indian woman to scale the Mt Everest five times was felicitated by Apurba Kumar Sharma, senior advocate and chairman, Executive Committee, Bar Council of India.
