Workshop on internet safety

GUWAHATI, Nov 19 - A day-long �State Level Workshop on Internet Safety� was organized by Consumers� Legal Protection Forum, Assam, in association with Consumer Voice, New Delhi and Google at a city hotel on Thursday.

Participants from various consumer organisations, engineering, management and law students from various educational institutions and universities, faculty members, voluntary and civil society organisations and common consumers from all over the State attend the workshop. Assam State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission president Justice Anima Hazarika inaugurated the workshop and appealed to the internet users to stay safe and secure online. �Several crimes can be committed on the internet. As the number of users of internet continues to grow worldwide every day, the safety of children and adults using internet has become a subject of great concern. You need to know how to keep yourself safe and secure in the world of internet. Make safety choices that fit your family,� Justice Hazarika said.

Shruti Hari, Associate Product Quality Operations of Google (India) while introducing the subject matter said that by using secured password, not responding to suspicious massages with personal information, logging out of public or shared computers, using a secured browser, using strong passwords, not ignoring online warnings, installing software from trusted sources and knowing one�s own e-mail settings were the main features for the regular internet users to stay safe.

Delivering his speech on �Security Caf� on Internet�, Hemant Upadhaya, Advisor-IT & Telecom Consumer Voice, said duplicate sites were the main threats. �Female internet user should be more careful. Password should never be shared with anyone. We should be always safe while shopping online,� he said.

In his welcome address, advocate Ajoy Hazarika, secretary, Consumers� Legal Protection Forum, said that in the era of e-commerce, there is a growing need for greater awareness on how to make the internet safe for users.

Medini Gogoi, guest faculty of Gauhati University Law Department, moderated the question-answer session where participants raised various issues on internet security.
