GUWAHATI, Oct 11 - For the first time in the North-east, a workshop on early Indian art and iconography was successfully organised by the Department of History, Gauhati University from September 24 to 30 on the varsity premises, stated a press release.
Discussions were held on different aspects of art like prehistoric and chalcolithic art, west Asian elements in Indian art, symbolism and eroticism in art, Brahmannical, Buddhist and Jain iconography, Ajanta paintings, art of the Pallavas and the Chalukyas etc.
The participants included research scholars and faculty from Benaras Hindu University, Dibrugarh University, Cotton University, Royal Global University, Gauhati University and colleges of Assam.
The workshop also included a field trip to the Assam State Museum where Dr Deepi Rekha Kouli, Director of the State Directorate of Archaeology, delivered a lecture on the sculptures of Assam.
The resource persons included faculty of Benaras Hindu University, professor emeritus Dr Maruti Nandan Prasad Tiwari, History of Art Department, Dr Vinay Kumar, Department of Ancient Indian History, Culture and Archaeology, as well as faculty of the Gauhati University History Department, professor Paromita Das and Dr Radha Das, and Dr Kamal Nayan Patowary of Barama College, added the release.
