GUWAHATI, Nov 16 - A four-day workshop on the topic �Sustainable management of the Brahmaputra River System, India in a changing climate for water security and disaster resilience�, organised by environment group Aaranyak in collaboration with SaciWATERs Cap-Net Network (SCaN) for South Asia (Hyderabad) and Forum for Policy Dialogue on Water Conflicts in India (Pune), started here yesterday, said a press release here.
Altogether 31 individuals from diverse professional backgrounds and institutes of different parts of India participated in the first day�s programme. Dr Partha J Das, head of water, climate and hazard division of Aaranyak inaugurated the workshop and delivered the welcome address.
Manas Kumar Bhattarcharya, manager operations, Aaranyak conducted the introductory session of the workshop. Chief guest Prof Dulal Chandra Goswami, a renowned environmentalist and expert on the Brahmaputra River, delivered his speech, after which Anup Kumar Mitra, former Secretary, Water Resources, Assam, delivered his speech as the guest of honour. PP Changkakati, Secretary, Water Resources, Assam also spoke.
The first training session was conducted on �Flood and erosion problem in the Brahmaputra river system and their mitigation.� It was conducted by Anup Kumar Mitra, who is also the Chairman, Technical Advisory Committee, Assam Water Resources Department. The second training session was on �Geomorphology and Hydrology of the Brahmaputra River,� which was conducted by Prof Dulal Chandra Goswami.
