Works under scanner after labourers death

By STAFF CORRESPONDENT

DIBRUGARH, June 18 Startling facts have come to light following the death of a construction worker of the multi-crore-rupee Hope project of the Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH) here.

The worker identified as Jayanta Duara (25) was almost buried, when a newly constructed wall fell on him. The worker who sustained serious injuries on his forehead, nose and chest died on Wednesday night. He hailed from Titadimoru village near Lahoal PS. He sustained injuries on June 14.

It is gathered that certain unscrupulous elements on behalf of the construction company have been making attempts to lure the family members with compensation so that they restrained from lodging FIR before the police.

While on spot study of the accident site, a group of masons and shuttering men told this newspaper that cheap quality works were going on in full swing. The construction company has also avoided erecting concrete posts between the walls, the workers said. Several fresh patch works were also noticed at several areas of the building. Rods clinging on to several concrete posts can be pulled and inserted back easily.

When asked to comment on the accident and the low quality work, chief superintendent and principal of AMCH, TR Borbora pointed at the PWD Department. It is the work of the PWD to see that the construction norms are adhered to and quality works are done, he said. The district body of the All Assam Students Union (AASU) has demanded an inquiry into the accident and also sought compensation for the dead. The students body has also demanded that the construction company be blacklisted. It needs mention here that the AMCH is getting a facelift with a slew of projects amounting to over Rs 100 crore.
