GUWAHATI, Feb 15 - The Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) has taken up a major Brahmaputra riverfront development project with technical support from the internationally famed Institution of Hydrology under the Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee.

The much-awaited work of riverfront development will start from March 1.

According to GMDA Chairman Dhiren Baruah, the Central Water Commission is preparing a detailed project report in this regard. The project will include beautification of the Brahmaputra riverfront from Kamakhya hill to Sukleswarghat.

The project will be designed in a way so that it can boost river tourism and enhance the beauty of the city and its biggest natural resource. This apart, many people will get economic benefit from the project when it is launched, added Baruah.

A five-foot base wall will also be constructed along the riverfront so that the people can get a glimpse of the mighty river, and enjoy the views of sunrise and sunset on the river.

Facilities of river cruise and ferry station have also been added to the project. The entire setup is expected to be completed within two years of commencement, with financial support from the Government of India.
