GUWAHATI, July 19 � The convention of the women writers of the capital city held on Monday formed a separate wing of the Kamrup Mahanagar Zila Sahitya Sabha for women writers to uphold the cause of the women writers and to highlight the contribution of the illustrious women writers of Assam from Padmawati Devi Phukanani till today.
The convention held under the auspices of the Kamrup Mahanagar Zila Sahitya Sabha was presided over by senior journalist DN Chakravartty.
Initiating the discussion, wellknown writer Nirupama Borgohain said that although the women writers have not been able to get due recognition from the society in general and Asam Sahitya Sabha in particular, the credit goes to the women writers that in several genres of Assamese literature women writers have very often excelled over their male counterparts in matter of quality and content of literary work.
Dr Anima Guha observed that low literacy rate among the women in the State and in the country was the most stumbling hurdle in the way of the women writers to convey their message of liberation of women and equality of mankind.
Dr Minati Hazarika, Dr Jyostna Bhattacharya, Dr Lily Rajbongshi, Eli Ahmed, Bina Kumari Rai Medhi and Urmila Chakravorty while participating in the discussion expressed happiness at the setting up of a separate wing for the women writers by the Sahitya Sabha.
The secretary of the Kamrup Mahanagar Zila Sahitya Sabha Dimbeswar Pathak and vice-president of the Zila Sahitya Sabha Hemen Talukdar and Manju Datta Barua, the convener of the meeting, explained the purpose of the assembly and thanked the women writers for attending in large numbers. The convention constituted an executive committee with Nirupama Borgohain as the chief adviser, Dr Anima Guha, Dr Minati Hazarika, Dr Lily Rajbongshi, and Dr Jyostna Bhattacharya as advisers and Manju Datta Barua as the chief coordinator.
The convention also decided to bring out a directory of the women writers of the city with their biodata and also agreed to bring out a few publications highlighting the role and genius of the Assamese women writers in the last two centuries.
Chakravartty in his speech praised the contributions of the women writers from the days of Jonaki to the years of Abahan, Ramdhenu, Prantik and Gariyoshi.
