Women to the forefront in anti-liquor drive

By A Correspondent

DHUBRI, Aug 22 - Seventy-eight local women, organised by the Dhubri Police station in groups as anti-liquor squads, have uprooted almost all the illegal liquor selling and drinking places in the town.

These local women mostly comprising homemakers and daily wage earners from the financially weaker sections of the society, were divided into different teams to curb the escalating growth of illegal drinking spots and liquor dealers. Police informed that these women were the chief victims of regular domestic violence by drunkard husbands.

The police informed that these 78 women who have been divided into different groups and are in charge of various places in the town have till last week seized almost 280 litres of liquor and have cleared at least 20 major illegal drinking spots in the town area.

The women really know where they need to raid as they are the regular victims of drunkard husbands. They know the spots and they know how and when they need to be raided, said Pradeep Kr Das, officer in charge of the Dhubri Sadar Police Station, and in the last two months, these women have shown tremendous results. Das also added that they organised these teams on an experimental basis, but they have extended their time looking at the results.

The OC also informed that the main factors that discourages such drinking is the shame attached with it. When these team of women raid with the help of police officials, the drunkards really feel shy, and we have seen very few cases when these people go back to regular drinking again said the OC, who also informed that such raids will continue for some more time.

The police also informed that most of the raids and seizure by these women were made between Panchughaat and Bahadurtari areas of Dhubri town.
