Women stage protest march against CAA

By CITY CORRESPONDENT

GUWAHATI, Jan 19 - Women from different walks of life staged a protest march against the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Act here on Sunday even as public rallies were held across the State.

The anti-CAA stir has witnessed an overwhelming and spontaneous response from women who have been taking part in several protest activities and voiced their concerns through different platforms.

Several women organisations and individuals from various parts of Guwahati gathered at the Latasil playground at 11 am and staged a protest demonstration, holding placards and shouting slogans such as We oppose anti-democratic CAA, Wont tolerate any threat to our language, culture and tradition. The march ended at Chandmari.

Among those who led the rally were actress Barasha Rani Bishaya, fashion designer Garima Garg and writers Arupa Patangia Kalita and Monalisa Saikia. Before the rally, Bishaya read out the preamble to the Constitution of India and all the women took pledge for safeguarding it.

We need a permanent solution. The State will not bear the burden of any additional illegal immigrants whether they are Muslims or Hindus. The State is only for indigenous Assamese and thats why people from all walks of life have joined the protest and raised their voice. The CAA should be scrapped immediately, the actress said.

We should unitedly protest and take the responsibility of saving the language and culture of Assam. The government has not paid any attention to the voice of the protesters and it is going to implement the law forcefully, Garg said.

The government took several decisions at the time of the recent protests in a bid to appease the indigenous groups and mislead them from the agitation. But the government did not succeed, she added.

The protest also caused traffic jam on the MRD Road for nearly an hour.

Earlier too, an all-women protest was held at the Latasil playground under the aegis of the All Assam Students Union on December 21.
