Women in Manipur facing rights violations

By Correspondent

IMPHAL, May 4 - Women and children in Manipur are facing serious human rights violations from the family, community and society as a whole.

This was the observation by the speakers at a media sensitisation programme on crime against women with special reference to suicide, suspicious death, rape and murder, which was organised by Women Action for Development (WAD), an Imphal-based NGO here on Saturday.

The State recorded 368 cases of rape and murder, suspicious death and suicide in the last 12 years (2005 to April, 2016). As many as 188 cases of violence against women including 10 cases each of rape and attempt to murder, 25 missing cases, four suicide and four murder cases were recorded from January to April 29 this year alone, according to data documented by WAD based on news reports.

Expressing concern over lack of peoples and governments seriousness on the cases of suicide or suspicious death, WAD expressed its desire that the mindset of people and the government needed to be changed.
